Twilight in the Alley /aka/ Back Alley No. 2,
1920

Hosted by Crooked Tree Studio, 127 Penn Avenue

The original work was just a sketch.  The view is from the alley beside the former Grand Opera House looking south between two sets of steps on either side of the alley.  Directly across the street is a small frame building, shown by itself in an open space.  The location of that building is the current corner of State Street and Penn Avenue, the present location of Mike's Penn Ave Grille.  The theatre was a prosperous business in 1920, but eventually closed and was demolished about 1998.  The building at 968 East State still exists, but the steps on the side of the building were removed about 2000.  The former alley is now an open space and walkway.
The host site of this Burchfield Footstep is Crooked Tree Studio, 127 Penn Avenue.

These views of the alley believed to be the site of Back Alley No. 2 show the changes that have occurred in Salem.  The top photo shows the steps that were still in use until about 2000, while the lower image shows a more recent view after the steps were removed.  Both photos are from the Burchfield Homestead Society collection.
